Art is Alive!! ...and going wild!
Thank you for visiting my website, I'm Michelle Nosco, an artist in residence at the WAV of Ventura, California. I've enjoyed my life in the arts and exhibiting paintings (as a young violinist) since I was a 5 year old girl in the Midwest.
I studied film at CalARTS (Masters TTvF), Painting, Art History, Advertising and Design at the University of Michigan (BFA), multi-media at the Detroit Museum of Art, drawing at Wayne State University and weaving at the Cranbrook School of Art.
After graduation I became an art director in advertising then a producer/director of films.. All along, painting has helped me to connect with my subjects as a professional artist and photographer eventually painting commissions and murals throughout Southern California.
In 2007 I was touched by Al Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth". As a result I created the Arts For Earth Foundation in California. My inspiration has been to show the soul of each animal I paint. To let my followers experience the personalities of wildlife and domestic animals first hand. These impressionistic works also include California landscapes and native wildlife to fund-raise for wildlife sanctuaries and wilderness reclamation projects.
I love working directly with my patrons and accept private commissions of people, domestic and wild animal portraits too.
My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.
Hurricane Katrina and Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth” inspired me in 2005 to use my passion for the wilderness to create compassion for all of us living here on planet Earth.
I create artwork that brings the soul of the wilderness to life! It helps me identify the life within all beings. Perhaps this will help us to love one another as we love ourselves and treat the Earth as a member of our own family.
I donate part of my profit from art sales to the 501c.3 group Arts For Earth Foundation. Along with many other donors, we have helped fund the CA Wildlife Center surgical facility. My current focus includes the environmental work of the Ventura Land Trust.
I love to paint. Usually I create finished works with oil paint and also small works with watercolor.
As an impressionist, my style shows my hand in the process, giving the painting an energetic presence. The color pallet is often wild like the “fauve” or “wild beast” period in France at the turn of the 20th century.
I use contrast of color and shape to enhance composition and story. I use color temperature to give a sense of light and form.
I love to draw. You will see drawings in watercolor pencil and graphite from my sketch books. You will also find charcoal figure studies of models sitting in my studio.
Drawings are used in an old world technique found in my more precise renaissance paintings. I coat varnish over the charcoal drawing and layer many colors to build up a translucent glaze. This gives a sense of tonal depth and dimension through the filtered interplay of color and shadow.
Many of my paintings have been exhibited and awarded since childhood. For a period of time my artwork wasn't acceptable. It baffled me to see big eyed cats, flowers and clowns accepted into a show but not my reproduction from Michaelangelo's Sistine Chapel. When I finally had the opportunity to speak to a judge it was clear. My entries were nude. Lesson learned, art must be family friendly when entered into a public exhibit!
